House of Ruth Stands for Social Justice and Equity
The strongest and most deeply held value, at House of Ruth, is that of non-violence. As an organization committed to ending domestic violence and pursuing social change, we condemn all forms of anti-Black racism and oppression. We mourn the senseless loss of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and many others, and stand with the Black community in support of demanding justice.
As anti-violence advocates, we stand for racial justice, equity, the end of patriarchy, and the end of police brutality. We acknowledge that transformational change is needed for a better society, a world free from violence, whether that be violence by a domestic abuser or violence driven by systemic racism or power.
We recognize that the work we do to end domestic violence will not be successful if we do not also work to end the oppression of Black people and other marginalized communities.
We must work together to dismantle the systems of oppression that enable all forms of violence wherever they occur. Oppressions, whether they be in the home, in communities, or in systems, have at their root, the desire to gain and maintain power and control over others.
We will work to create change in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, within the communities we serve. We will strive to hold the institutions in our society accountable to change the root causes of injustice, inequity, and oppression of marginalized communities. We are committed to building a world where all people can thrive and find safety and well-being.
We are in an unprecedented time. House of Ruth believes that peace and justice can exist in a world that promotes liberation for all communities. We envision a better world free of racism and oppression. We stand in our mission to building a just world. We urge every person to join in, not just making this commitment in words, but in action. We are all responsible.
