Residential Services

We are here to join and support survivors on their healing journey

Our emergency and transitional shelters provide safe residences 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for survivors and families seeking refuge from a domestic violence crisis. House of Ruth residents are granted an opportunity to begin healing physically and emotionally, before taking the next steps to begin building a safe and healthy new life for themselves and their families.

Hear What Survivors Have to Say

Children’s Program

The Children’s Program provides therapeutic groups and activities for children to express themselves and gain information about domestic violence, self-esteem, and safety planning. Children have opportunities to identify and talk about their feelings as well as the trauma they have experienced. The goals of the Children’s Program are thus:

  • Help children feel safe

  • Understand the impact of violence

  • Identify positive adult role models

  • Learn to create safety plans

  • Learn to express themselves in healthy manners

  • Utilize community resources

And above all; understand that violence in their families is not their fault. Our children’s advocates assist children in building structured, stable routines and environments while creating positive experiences in shelter.

Educational and Tutoring Services

Our shelter programs welcome teacher volunteers from the local Unified School District who provide educational services to emergency child clients Monday - Friday from 3:00p.m. - 5:00p.m. The volunteers also offer tutoring to transitional child clients as they integrate back into school.

Our esteemed community partner, School on Wheels, provides more in-depth and personalized tutoring services to K-12 children experiencing houselessness in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.  School on Wheels advocates have the ability to assign long-term tutors to child clients; who are then able to continue sessions with clients after they have exited our shelter program.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Fun activities are incorporated in the daily structure of the program to provide an emotional outlet for the children and to create a sense of normalcy in their lives. We also operate a summer day camp program and holiday celebrations for the clients to attend and have positive family interactions and bonding experiences.
